Movement Partnerships

Supporting Racial, Gender and Climate Justice

Solidaire’s members move money to the frontlines of social change movements in order to fund urgent needs, support bold and innovative ideas that others may not fund, and help build long-term infrastructure for the movement.

Solidaire’s approach to grantmaking is to be transformational rather than merely transactional, bring more money to the movement ecosystem, and bring more than money to its work of social change. Through our grantmaking and funding, Solidaire seeks to achieve five goals:  

  • Protect movements immediately as movement leaders and their organizations face a heightened risk of violence and state repression, alongside the considerable stresses and harms of fighting racism 24-7. 
  • Resource movement infrastructure by funding legal, communications, technology,  financial, organizational development, healing, cultural work, and leadership development to sustain and support our movements for the long term. 
  • Support resistance through funding organizations and activities that are focused directly on dismantling and disrupting extractive, exploitative, and oppressive systems steeped in structural racism. 
  • Fund imagination and futures by investing deeply in the work of envisioning and creating new institutions, deeply democractic governance structures, and decolonized systems that recognize and respect the dignity of all oppressed peoples.
  • Liberate wealth to support Black liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty by calling on philanthropy to liberate capital and wealth in new ways and build durable power for grassroots and movement leaders.

The Building the Fire Fund is the first fund dedicated to Indigenous reproductive justice and a critical piece of infrastructure in the Indigenous Reproductive Justice Movement.

The Janisha R. Gabriel Movement Protection Fund moves money quickly to urgent security needs and to build movement protection infrastructure.

Learning and Evaluation Analysis

LEARNINGS FROM OUR GRANTMAKING

We constantly evaluate and refine our grantmaking practices to best support social justice formations and a healthy movement ecosystem. We do this by forming trusting relationships with our grantees and maintaining consistent dialogue with our movement partners, advisory committees, and funding allies. Our yearly Learning and Evaluation process allows us to gather insights, trends, hopes, and challenges from the field, so we can effectively accompany intersectional movements for justice with integrity.

Currently, at Solidaire we are focused on multi-year grantmaking and the importance of continued support for our current grantees. We expect the soonest new grant cycle to start at the earliest 2025.
